Dr. Shirin Barez

Dr. Barez is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained retina specialist. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with honors, receiving both bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Dr. Barez earned her medical degree from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Following her internship, she spent a year at the prestigious National Eye Institute performing research in the laboratory of immunology. After completing her ophthalmology residency at George Washington University, Dr. Barez completed additional training, completing a two-year vitreoretinal fellowship at the Devers Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon.

Dr. Barez is Clinical Professor of Health Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, where, in addition to her clinical and teaching responsibilities, she is dedicated to leading-edge research to improve the early detection of diabetic retinopathy. She has published numerous scientific papers and has lectured extensively.

Dr. Barez is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, and a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists. She has extensive experience and expertise in the treatment of macular degeneration, vitreoretinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, and other retinal vascular diseases.
