Meet Our Ophthalmologists

Optima Eye Care brings together doctors with advanced training in complementary areas of ophthalmology. This collaborative approach helps patients receive coordinated care, even when a condition affects more than one part of the eye.

Mark R. Mandel, MD, is a fellowship-trained corneal and refractive surgery specialist and one of California’s most experienced cataract surgeons. He trained at Oxford University, earned his medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine, and completed a corneal transplant fellowship at the University of Iowa. Dr. Mandel is known throughout the Bay Area as the “Doctor’s Doctor” because many physicians and eye care professionals have chosen him to perform surgery on themselves, their families, and their staff.

Robin Kuriakose, MD, completed his ophthalmology residency at Loma Linda University and advanced fellowship training in cornea and refractive surgery at Northwestern University, where he was named Fellow of the Year. He has a strong interest in technology, innovation, patient education, and helping people understand how treatment can improve their daily lives.

Shirin Barez, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained retina specialist. She is also a Clinical Professor of Health Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, where she has contributed to research focused on the early detection of diabetic retinopathy. Her experience includes the diagnosis and treatment of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular diseases, and other vitreoretinal conditions.

A Team Dedicated to Advanced Surgery

Our doctors are supported by a highly experienced team of optometrists, registered nurses, laser technicians, surgical technicians, patient counselors, and administrative professionals. Many of our team members have worked together for decades, creating a cohesive system of care that helps each visit and procedure run smoothly.

More than one-third of our Hayward staff is dedicated to advanced cataract and refractive surgery. Their responsibilities include:

  • Preparing patients for treatment
  • Performing specialized diagnostic testing
  • Assisting during surgical procedures
  • Explaining preparation and recovery instructions
  • Coordinating follow-up visits
  • Answering questions throughout the process

Our team is knowledgeable, approachable, and focused on making your experience comfortable and well organized.

Advanced Technology With a Personal Approach

Technology is an important part of modern eye care, but it is only effective when paired with careful evaluation and experienced judgment. Optima Eye Care uses advanced diagnostic and surgical equipment to measure the eyes, plan treatment, and perform precise procedures.

For laser vision correction, our technology includes the Allegretto laser with active tracking and large-pupil capabilities, as well as IntraLase and Ziemer femtosecond lasers for all-laser LASIK. We also offer advanced cataract technology and personalized lens implant choices, including the Light Adjustable Lens.

Our doctors take the time to explain what each technology can and cannot do. You will receive honest guidance about your candidacy, expected results, recovery, and alternative options.
